-
We need to push ourselves out of our comfort zone - both in life and in rehab.
John's Story
Having been an avid sports player from a young age, John has had his fair share of injuries which inspired him to be able to diagnose and treat others. John began his career as a clinician by completing an Athletic Therapy & Training degree at DCU, which focuses on musculoskeletal injury, health, and rehabilitation. As part of his degree, he completed a 6-month internship working at a sports medicine facility in the United States, working with international athletes at a top university. He received a 1:1 grade on his thesis titled 'The relationship between posterior chain strength and injuries in runners who have no previous history of injury'. This gave him a keen interest in helping all levels of runners who become injured.
Following completion of his degree, he went on to work clinically in a physiotherapy practice in South Dublin. Here, he worked with a wide range of clients, treating many common conditions such as low back and neck pain, knee and hip OA, and foot pain, as well as a variety of other conditions. He aims to help people in pain by finding the root cause of the injury and providing an individually tailored treatment plan using a combination of resistance training and manual therapy to achieve the patient's goals.
He has recently returned to education to pursue an MSc in Physiotherapy at Health Science University, Bournemouth. As part of this MSc, he has completed clinical rotations where he worked as part of renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Kelleher's physio team in Santry Sports Clinic, dealing with complex spinal pain. He also completed a clinical placement with An Saol, working with individuals with severe acquired brain injuries.
John currently also works with the St.Mary's U20 rugby team as lead Athletic Therapist, providing match-day healthcare. He has previously worked with inter-county GAA teams, League of Ireland football teams, and other elite rugby squads.
Outside of his clinical life, John plays senior hurling and football for his local GAA club, Ballyboden St. Endas, and is an active gym goer.
